Join our Governing Board
We are always keen to hear from people who would like to contribute their skills and experience to support our school/federation by becoming a co-opted governor.
School governors play a vital strategic role in the leadership of schools. The governing body works with school leaders to ensure the best possible outcomes for children, supporting the school’s vision while also providing appropriate challenge and accountability.
Governors do not run the school on a day-to-day basis. Instead they focus on the strategic direction of the school, helping to ensure that:
-
children receive the best possible education
-
public money is spent effectively
-
the school is safe and well led
-
leaders are supported and appropriately challenged
Governors work together as a team and attend governing body meetings, committee meetings and training to help them fulfil their responsibilities.
What is a Co-opted Governor?
Co-opted governors are appointed by the governing body because of the skills, experience or knowledge they can bring. They may come from a wide range of professional or community backgrounds and help strengthen the expertise of the governing body.
We particularly welcome applications from individuals with experience in areas such as:
-
education or early years
-
finance or business
-
human resources
-
safeguarding
-
health and safety
-
legal or governance
-
community leadership
-
marketing or communications
However, you do not need to be an expert in education. The most important qualities are a commitment to improving outcomes for children, the ability to work as part of a team and a willingness to learn.
Who Can Apply?
Most people aged 18 or over can become a governor. You do not need to be a parent or have children at the school. Many governors are members of the local community or bring expertise from their professional roles.
You will need to:
-
be willing to attend meetings and prepare for them
-
undertake training to support your role
-
work collaboratively with other governors and school leaders
-
complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
The role is voluntary, but it is also extremely rewarding and offers the opportunity to make a real difference to children and families in the community.
